A Karu Senior Magistrates' Court has
sentenced one Nasiru Mohammed of Deidei,
Abuja to three months imprisonment
with 12 strokes of the cane for stealing a
motorcycle.
Mohammed, 23, was arraigned by the police
on a one-count charge of being in possession
of a stolen motorcycle, contrary to section
319 (A) of the Penal Code. The Senior
Magistrate, Aminu Abdullahi, passed the
judgment after the accused had pleaded
guilty to the charge and asked the court for
leniency.
He said the accused was sincere by pleading
guilty to the charge and not wasting the
court’s time. ``However, this will not stop
me from punishing you so as to serve as
deterrent to others like you. I hereby use
my discretion and appeal by the prosecutor
for a summary trial.
``You are to serve a prison term of three
months without an option of fine and you
are to receive 12 strokes of the cane, after
which I hope you will be of good character
and be a repentant person.’’
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Ambi Ayuba,
had told the court that the convict was
arrested by a team of officers led by one
Insp. Umar Sarke, attached to police state
command.
He said the convict was arrested with the
stolen motorcycle on June 23 around Dagba
Village in Abuja. Ayuba said
that convict had confessed during
investigation that it was the second time he
was arrested for similar offence.
